A NEWLY established mountain bike track is adding 13 kilometres of thrill factor to the Tarkine Forest Adventures in Tasmania’s North West. At the moment the area is open by appointment for groups. Contact Forestry Tasmania for more information.
The track, developed through the federally funded Tasmanian Forest Tourism Development Program with in kind support from Forestry Tasmania, incorporates three loops of varying difficulty, catering for beginners right through to experienced cyclists.
Individuals and families are able to hire mountain bikes from the Tarkine Forest Adventures Visitor Centre through a partnership between Forestry Tasmania and Mountain Bikes Tasmania.
The track enables riders to test their stamina and skills and the setting gives them the opportunity to get out and explore the area and take in the beauty of the Tarkine’s blackwood forests first hand.
The mountain bike track one of a number of new adventure tourism initiatives, including guided tours, to be developed at the newly-rebranded and revamped Tarkine Forest Adventures. They include:
- to Becket’s Hut to find out how the early pioneers survived in this beautiful but tough environment
- the Tarkine After Dark lantern tour which features tales of ghosts and hardship, laughs and larrikins and on occasion, encounters with some of the local wildlife
- the Bushmen’s Tour through the forest with a couple of tough pioneers ready to share their yarns, bush tucker and experience of the areas they once worked harvesting timber for sawlogs and barrel staves, before the Blackwood forest reclaimed its home
